Symbolism: The Controversy. Peace Sign. Good or Evil?

Many of us, myself included are not often aware of the meaning, nor origin of the many symbols we encounter, or wear for that matter. Sure, we’ve been told one thing, but if we were to research and dig a little deeper we might find out that what we’ve been told isn’t necessarily the straight up truth about the meaning behind the image. And, that there may be a lot more to it.

After the creation of my most current painting, Peace 2. I decided that I would start a blog on my artwork to share my creative process, and use of techniques. Of course I want to share facts along the way in regards to the images I use within my artwork from time to time. This is what made me do a bit of research on the Peace sign. I have always liked the Peace sign and what I thought I knew about it. I thought.

Shockingly while during my research I found out that the symbol may have been created as an Anti-Christian symbol. On the other flip side of the coin, according to The History of the Peace Symbol-20th Century, the peace sign may have been created in 1958, and derived by the British artist, Gerald Holtom. Who, intended for the design to be symbolic for the Direct Action commitee Against Nuclear War (DAC). Who knew? I didn’t. To find out more click on the high-light above.

But, it all makes sense. I once heard that the symbol represented the female. My intentions were to use a symbol which presents the ideology of the desire to have, and promote a state of physical and mental tranquility as finding serenity being born in the midst of wars and chaos. “Imagine all the people living life as one. You might say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one….” Sounds like a familiar song? My intentions were, and are in recognition of this dream so meaninfully song by John Lennon, being a Beatles fan and all. My artful rendition had nothing to do with glorifying the devil.

According to some of the websites viewed on the Peace Symbol, it's representation of meaning may be considered a contradictory. It may have originated as a broken cross? According to Wikipedia many symbols are used in a variety of ways within various cultures, similar to how various colors represent a variety of meanings. This I knew.

According to The Peace Sign and Satanism-Jesus Savior the Peace Symbol needs to be researched and examined much more closely because the symbol’s origin in history proves to be the visual mystic character for “Aum.” This I did not know.

From what I understand thus far of the Peace Symbol. it may depend on how the image is erected, up, or down.

Who believe everything posted over the Internet, or even written in books? But, after weighing in on the information, and taking a moment to really look at what I’ve created an un-easy feeling swept over me. I will no longer see this image as I once had. Can you see the body in the center with arms stretched out and hanging downwards? I used a lot of red drippy paint that helps to create attention to what the image represented in my mind at the time, referring to chaos and war. Of course, one can turn the image upside down and the simple lined drawn image will look like the arms are now stretched up and out. Personally, I don’t care, because it is never my thoughtful intentions to invite satan anywhere, nor into anything I do intentionally, as I am a Believer in Christ Jesus. I'm not a puratanic, but I do have my own personal beliefs. Perhaps you have to, and this is to be respected.

As for my artistic style my real joy comes from the process, inclusive of materials and supplies used more so than the added imagey. I don’t appricate paintings as much that look like the artist was stingy with the paint. However often times, the colors as well as the imagery is important to the degree of the spoken language of art. Symbols are visually powerful. Some hold more impact for people than others, like the Cross.

So, for now on I will research any symbol as best I can before using them in any of my creations. If you would like to view more on the symbolic image below are a few Url's that can help get you started.

Please, by all means let me know your thoughts.

Thank you.
